I know a lot of families that take down your christmas decor. down the day after christmas, but it’s meant to be the day after new year’s. Or at least it’s supposed to be a tradition. Actually, it’s your choice.

You ever heard that song? The Twelve Days of Christmas? You know, turtle doves and all that stuff? Eh? Well, historically, the Christmas holiday was meant to be celebrated over 12 days, starting December 25th. So, each day, the family would get together and have a nice sit-down meal and the children would get a different gift each day. Nothing fabulous mind you, because back in the old days, like 200 years ago, most gifts were handmade. But still. So the idea was, you start celebrating Christmas on December 25 and stop on January 5. Leave the tree up a few more days, and then take it down by the middle of January.

Traditionally, the twelve days of Christmas end on January 6th, the Epiphany. This is when you should take down Christmas decorations.

According to the Christian and/or Roman Catholic church calendar, the Christmas season traditionally doesn’t end until Jan.6th. This is known as “Little Christmas” aka “Three Kings Day” or technically Ephiphany; the day/night that the ‘Three Wise Men’ from the east came to visit Jesus. Most likely these 3 men were not actually kings as tradition holds, but astrologers (hence “wise men”) who studied the stars and noticed a phenomenon occurring in the western sky. Thus they set off to follow the “star” and discovered that it led them to the manger where the baby Jesus was.
This day concludes the Christmas season of celebration according to the Christian church. Many people follow this tradition and wait until then or after, to finally take down their decorations. Therefore its up to an indiviual’s beliefs as to when to actually take them down.
