What to do in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve for a small group of young ladies looking for a fun time?

Me and a few of my girlfriends are in college and looking for a break on New Year’s so we have plans to go to San Francisco on the week of New Year celebrations. We don’t want to do traditional or “tourist” type of events, we’re looking towards shopping, and partying. Any suggestions as to where to go? I have been to San Francisco 4 times already and I’m looking for something more local and big.

Not sure what scene you’re into, but the Marina area is pretty hip/trendy with a younger college/twenty-something crowd. Tons of bars and shopping on Union St, as well as on Fillmore St and Polk St. If you’re into the hippie/retro/funky/diverse scene, check out the Haight-Ashbury area…again, lots of shopping and bars on Haight St.
