I saw an “Everybody loves Raymond” episode where Marie (the matriarch) made a tofu turkey, shaped like a turkey and all. Funny. But seriously, you can eat most of the sides, or can if you leave out the bacon in the green bean casserole, substitute vegetable broth for beef or chicken broth etc. Check out “The Vegetarian Feast Menu” page on Yahoo!Food by Maggie Nemser (The whole article is titled 10 Thanksgiving Menus For Every Taste, Editor’s Picks, posted Wed Nov 7). The Portobello entree looks real yummy.

Every Thanksgiving I make a turkey for my family and I make ALL the sides with veg broth and no type of meat. So I basically eat everything except the turkey. I eat Chestnut stuffing, Green Bean Casserole, Glazed Sweet Potatoes, Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Cranberry Sauce, Corn and Gravy…..I THINK THAT IS ENOUGH FOR ME!!
Happy Thanksgiving!

A friend of mine went mostly vegetarian, recently. Her son has a condition called PKU, and he cannot process the proteins in meat.
She had found a recipe for Thanksgiving dessert that is really good. All I can remember of it, is it has pumpkin and coolwhip in it. It comes out all light and fluffy….. and you don’t even miss the pie crust. When all is said and done, there is very little protein left in it, because the coolwhip cuts it down, per serving.
I’ll have to see if I can find that recipe. I know it’s simple to make. It even calls for all the same spices that pumpkin pie calls for, it’s just not heavy, like the custard would be.

Only turkey is out. You can make stuffing without meat and bake it in a casserole dish instead of a turkey. And you can make vegetarian gravy (Hain’s makes packets of gravy mix or you can search for veg gravy recipes online.) Last year I bought a Quorn roast in place of the turkey. I think Quorn has egg whites in it so this year I’m making chickpea cutlets (I’m vegan now.) There is also Tofurkey. Or you could just skip the faux meat and enjoy mashed potatoes with veg gravy, stuffing, veggies, salad and whatever else you usually have.

Read the ingredients like you would any other day, and don’t eat any parts of dead animals.
Seriously. Why do people think thanksgiving is different than any other day???
