Black Friday 2008 falls on November 28th. Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving — is the traditional kick-off for the Christmas shopping season and typically sees stores choked by throngs of customers seeking deals that retailers have advertised to draw big crowds.

There is a common misconception that Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the season, but that title most often is taken by the day before Christmas, as consumers go mad with last-minute shopping. According to Wikipedia, Black Friday always ranks in the Top 10 and often the Top 5 in terms of the busiest shopping days of the season. In 2003 and 2005, however, Black Friday actually was the busiest shopping day of the year.

Retailers spend the fortnight leading up to Black Friday advertising their Thanksgiving Holiday sales, ad campaigns that frequently feature teaser promotions, offering limited numbers of high desirable or trendy — and highly discounted — items.

It is not unusual to see consumers lined up for hours before the store doors open on Black Friday, which is one of the reason that this shopping day gained a moniker that sounds so negative. The throngs of customers supposedly evoked the long queues of bank depositors that lined up for bank runs after the epochal, apocalyptic ” Black Thursday ,” the Crash of the Stock Market on Thursday, October 29, 1929.

The usage of Black Friday in this sense dates back to at least 1965. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania police department began using the term Black Friday as a pejorative, due to the crowd control problems caused by the crowds of shoppers.

However, there is another sense to Black Friday — that the Christmas holiday shopping season is the engine by which the retail industry goes into profitability for the year. There is a common perception that retailers typically work at a loss for the first 10 and 3/4 months of the year, and that it is only the Christmas shopping season that pushes the retail sector into profitability.

It’s after Thanksgiving because after Thanksgiving, everyone turns their eyes to Christmas and the Christmas shopping season kicks off. It’s not religious or anything. And since Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, Black Friday is always on a Friday.

Basically it’s the day right after thanksgiving where mothers and crazy holiday people go and TRY to get their holiday shopping done early. Thus the huge crowds.

    And Voila! black friday

It’s after Thanksgiving because to put it much earlier wouldn’t get people out shopping as much. Thanksgiving, being about 1 month before Xmas, gives most people plenty of time to shop and stores don’t have to run their big sales and special offers for more than those few weeks…so their sales pick up drastically, but they aren’t having to slash prices for as long (such as if the big sales day were pushed for an earlier date than day after thanksgiving).

Thanksgiving to many is the ‘kick off’ to the holiday season, so the day after being pushed by retailers as big for shopping makes sense. Many people are off work, kids out of school, families together, etc…what better time to put everything on sale and see how much folks will come out and by for Xmas? ☺

It’s not so much that black friday was placed on the day after Thanksgiving but more that people often began their holiday shopping on that day so retailers picked up on that and started having bigger and better sales to get folks to come out and buy…thus at some point it was designated as “black friday”.

It’s after thanksgiving because everyone is looking forward for Christmas. And besides in many cases in the United States, school is off on the day after Thanksgiving. Therefore, people take advantage of young adults and teenagers and place the sale on Friday. Everyone loves Friday:)
