What do vegetarians eat for thanksgiving?

I know thanksgiving is a long time from now but there’s nothing wrong with planning. I’m a 15 yr old girl and I’m the only one in my family whose a lacto vegetarian. What are some easy and inexpensive recipes for me to prepare for thanksgiving?

Last year I made stuffed acorn squash filled with wild rice, cranberries, raisins, sauteed onion etc. I also had mashed potatoes on the side with vegetarian gravy and roasted carrots drizzled with honey

On Thanksgiving we had a tofurky vegetarian feast (kind of expensive and I didn’t really like it), vegan green bean casserole http://vegetarian.about.com/od/sidevegetabledishes/r/beancasserole.htm , cranberry sauce, and a store bought vegan pumpkin pie.

Since I wasn’t happy with the boxed tofurkey this year I’m going to try this

Last year I tried a homemade tofu turkey for the first time and it was SO GOOD. I can’t believe what I’ve been missing out on all these years. Here’s a link to the recipe I used http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipes/9679?section= I’ve made it twice, once with oregano in place of sage. I suggest oregano. I halved the recipe since it was just for two people, but I wouldn’t suggest trying to make a single serving. The left overs are just too good!

If you’re not a fan of tofu, I’d suggest making a squash main dish. Baked butternut squash halves with pistou sauce are amazing, and you can stuff the hollow at the bottom with mushrooms, rice, or veg-friendly stuffing.

If you don’t like squash, just search the internet. There are plenty of amazing options, and if you don’t find any you like Thanksgiving is just about the easiest day of the year to make a meal out of side dishes.

Speaking of side dishes, my family usually has stuffing (vegetarian variety), mashed potatoes or mashed sweet potatoes (if you like gravy, try making mushroom gravy), a raw veggie tray with pickles and olives, bread, corn on the cob or some other vegetable, and a casserole or two. And of course we have like six million different desserts.

All the best stuff. 🙂 I’m vegan and I always make this: http://www.grouprecipes.com/29239/best-seitan-tofu-loaf.html and some homemade stuffing…no recipe for that, I just make it the way my mom always did except I use whole grain bread and veg. broth instead of meat based. Oh, and I add some grated carrot too, which my mom never did. And then lots of veggies & stuff. This is what I had last year, if I’m not forgetting anything: yams, string beans, peas, carrots, mashed potatoes & gravy, corn, homemade applesauce, and for dessert I had my mom’s apple pie & I made some kind of cake or cookies or something. I can’t remember what it was. I also decided to make fresh cranberry sauce last year, which was delicious…first time I ever had it homemade & it’s definitely something I’ll continue to do. That canned stuff always grossed me out. I’ve also just made vegan lasagne for Thanksgiving before, with garlic bread & such when I’m not going to be with a lot of people & I’m the host.

My nephew is vegan and my aunt bought him a tofurkey. It is a roll made out of tofu, it is supposed to be a substitute for turkey. You can get them in grocery stores here in Canada, I am not sure about the US.

But stuffed acorn squash sounds good – that sounds good to me too and I’m not vegetarian!

Well, you can probably eat most of the sides. Try lentil croquettes or a Field Roast. Make your own gravy.

I have never had one, but I knew someone that cooked up something called a tofurky. It is some kind of meat replacement with stuffing of some sort inside.

I am going to have a hard time because my whole family pretty much juice everything with meat. I used to think it’s delicious now I truly see how sick I was for enjoying it when I was a meat eater.

I might as well celebrate alone unless they would make separate dishes.
