How much do you spend on family members for christmas gifts?

I love shopping for other people and usually start shopping for Christmas gifts in August. this tends to lead to large amounts of money spent on nieces, nephews and grandparents in comparison to my husband and daughter. In the effort to be more financially minded, I am wondering what an appropriate amount of money is to spend on gifts. Or if anyone has advice on how i can spend less aside from sale shopping. thanks

A gift doesn’t have to have a price. A letter proving your love for someone else is the best gift of all!

I make gifts (for the adults)..it’s a tonnnnn cheaper! all you have to do is buy the materials which are usually cheap, and put some effort into making a nice gift out of them.

Last year i made home made gift. I made mince pies, liquor, truffles, toiletries basket, jams etc. It cost me much less. Everyone but one person loved them and it made all the effort put into it worthwhile, but for the one person who did not appreciate it i’m going to be buying him a present this year and sticking to a budget of not more than £10!

I too have quite a big family and not just that but 5 birthdays as well around the christmas period. This is what i spend to give you a idea but I do break it up as I buy presents from now and finish in october – I have already bought 8 so far!

    My husband – £250
    My Mum – £150
    My Mums partner – £20
    His 2 kids – £15 each
    My Dad – £30
    My Dads wife – £20
    My Grandma – £30
    My Grandad – £30
    Friends x 4 – £15 each
    My Niece – £20
My Husbands Mum and Stepday – £35 total
My Husbands 4 brothers and sister – £15 each

Wow, thats quite alot when you add it up but theres just so many people to buy for then another £150 on the 5 birthdays around that time to! Still when I have been really skint I have made chocolate truffles and flvoured oils and made hampers rather then buying things and really cut back. Ebays great for bargains.

I am in my 30s. I spend about $100 on each of my parents. I spend $100-$200 on my daughter. My spouse and I don’t exchange gifts. We just buy something we both want/need, save the money, or put the money towards a vacation in the summertime. I spend about $20-$40 on my grandmother and $75 on my brother and sister in law. I spend $50 on my nephew, but we just have one. We also have a few friends we spend in the $25 range for.

I love buying gifts, too. You could do what we do – not exchange gifts with your spouse or put a very low limit on it – say $20 for a token gift. It saves a lot of time and money. And when kids are young, a few cheaper toys are as thrilling as expensive ones. However, that gets tougher as they get older! I think you could save on grandparent gifts – framed pictures of your family/daughter would probably thrill them. Or go half with a sibling if you have one so you can still get them something nice for a little less.

On one side of the family, we draw names. So instead of buying 6 gifts, we buy one “good” gift for one person. The $ cap is $75. It saves a lot of money. Maybe there is somewhere in the family you can do that kind of “Secret Santa” name draw.

    Merry Christmas, fellow Christmas lover!
