Do you buy gift cards for your family members to give as christmas gifts?

My husband says no because gift cards are not personal. I on the other hand think gift cards are great. Especially for your parents or grandparents who have everything they want or need. What could be better than dinner out at your favorite restaurant or going shopping for yourself. When someone gives me a gift card I love it! I also buy $25.00 gift cards throughout the year for myself and stash them in a box. That way when christmas time comes around I can do my gift shopping with those cards in my little box.

Yes. I buy gift cards so they can buy themselves anything they want. Because sometimes they may not like what i get them and end up not being used/worn.

I totally understand where your husband is coming from, I really resisted the idea of gift cards in the beginning, but I found a suitable compromise. I like to get the gift card and something personal and small to wrap it up with. Then it’s not immediately obvious how much you spent and it shows you thought of them personally instead of just grabbing a card from a shelf at the store. Depending on who youre shopping for some ideas are box of chocolates, mugs, a keepsake box, a CD (maybe of Xmas music, they’re usually pretty cheap), baked goods, a small piece of jewelry.

I always give gift cards when I don’t know what else to get someone. Or I get them a gift card a nice gift, so they get both 🙂

I am a mom and grandmother. I think gift cards are great. I’m on a fixed income so I like the restaurant cards.

Well, again that age old rule, gift what you would like yourself. I LOVE getting gift cards, and I understand the feeling that it may be impersonal, but really who doesn’t love going out to a store and picking out something they don’t have to pay for? And they aren’t completely thoughtless; for example, if you gift someone who’s always working on their home a Home Depot gift card, they’d love it. Or someone who does a lot of crafts a craft store gift card.. etc they’d not only appreciate it, but realize the sentiment behind it! 🙂

I never bought gift cards for my parents but I do for my kids. Mainly because what my kids want is too expensive for me to buy for them so they can just add the gift card to their own money to help them get what they want. They also want stuff I can’t buy them like itunes which you need a card for…

I disagree with your husband. Gift cards are a nice way of sharing the holidays with someone. And if they can buy something they want, they’re much more likely to really enjoy your gift.

Sometimes I’ll buy Gift Cards, especially for those friends or relatives who live interstate – postage costs are so expensive and a small gift can easily end up costing me twice as much to give.

My young daughters are always short of cash, so they’re delighted to receive a Gift Card. Besides, a day or two after Christmas is when all of the shops start their Sales and the value of the Gift Card can stretch up to 100% more. That makes me smart and my daughters happy.

Good old Dad – he’s not just a pretty face …LOL…

Gift cards are so popular because that’s what people really want – not another ugly jumper. Let them choose!
