Why is it a tradition for people to go to church to bring in the New Year?

I know ALOT of churches have night watch services all over the world to bring in the new year, but I was just wondering how did this become a tradition. Do you really feel like it is necessary or would you rather be at home or somewhere else bringing in the New Year.

The religious leaders realized they could bring in more money that way.

    I went to church. 🙂

Thank the Lord for the previous year and his blessings to get us through. As well as welcoming the new year with Him. As well as writing NY Resolutions i.e. How God has blessed me in 2008? Identifying habits that doesn’t please the Lord; being specific and personal aspirations which may be spiritual.

I go to church during NYE every year. It’s a great way to start the new year, instead of fireworks. What do people seriously gain from fireworks? Temporary happiness, perhaps.

As opposed to the tradition of getting slobbering drunk and/or wasted on New Year’s Eve?

Since when has it been a tradition? Nobody I know goes to church on New Year unless it’s a Sunday.

I would not say it is a “tradition” as much as just something they do. Most Christians feel that ending one year and starting a new one in the House of God is a good thing to do. Pastors as well feel it gives their Church members something to do besides doing Worldly things.

Personally, I can’t think of anything I would rather do besides praising my Lord on New Years night. But then again, I can’t think of anything I would rather do any other night as well.

Well no churches around here do that. However, for Catholics (not sure who else) it is a Holy Day, The Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God. so that may be what you are asking.

We invite God into and look to him for the coming year.
At our church we have New Year’s Eve tradition. We write letters to God about the coming year: what our concerns are, our hopes, about our loves ones, etc. The church keeps them and mails them out at the end of June.
My wife and I almost always forget about them, then they show up, and it is a very cool thing.
You see where you were and where are…. how God has worked and how things have changed, and it really is a chance to reflect and learn.

    Anyway… Happy New Year!
