What should I expect in Paris for New Year’s 2009?
So I am planning to go to Paris to celebrate the New Year. I got a real cheap ticket from a friend who works for the airline. So I am totally ready. I was just wondering if I could get help in knowing what to expect while there. I have never been overseas. I’m a single guy so I am definitely looking for a good time. Any help would be great.

I’ve never been in Paris for the New Year… or France… =/ But I live in País el Vasco… next to Pays d’Basqué France… [South West] & New Year & Christmas seem’s to be a Family event there… maybe París might be a bit more fun… because it’s a big city but I’ve never cross & go to Biarritz or the BAB/BAM area after Dec. 20 =) everything get’s boring

The most exciting time to be in Paris for the new year is on the Champs-Elysées, where 100 000 people are, with a bottle of Champagne of course (20-30€ only in a shop for a good one !).

French people start wishing each other cheerful Bonne Annees and exchanging bises (small kisses on each cheek) at the stroke of midnight January 1st. The Champs-Elysees is the place to head if you want to be at the center of the party. Starting at around 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, people start to flock to the famous street, often bringing along bottles and plastic flutes. From many places on the Champs-Elysees, you can get a good view of the Eiffel Tower, which explodes into a sparkling dance of light at the stroke of midnight.
I’ve been there twice. We especially like the Latin Quarter (Arrondissement 5) because it is close to Notre Dame and the docks for Seine River cruises. Travel in Paris, use the Metro. The Eiffel Tower is number one on everybody’s list and it does not disappoint. Next is Notre Dame and you must go to the Louvre Museum. One of our unexpected favorites is Sainte-Chapelle, with its stunning stained glass windows. You will thank me. Instead I saved my euros for a single meal out per day, and tried to focus on ordering just an appetizer or a sandwich when I did. Otherwise, I bought baguettes from local bakeries for 1 euro and went to the grocery store for toppings. It’s tempting to buy little gifts for everyone you know, but the prices on sidewalk souvenirs are extremely high. If you want to get something for friends and family, try to avoid buying outside of major tourist attractions and instead focus on smaller gift shops in out of the way spots. I saw identical prints of the Arc de Triomphe for 5 euro and 1 euro, just depending on the location. Shop around and you’ll save.
