what is the new year tradition where you write yourself a check to bring you wealth in the new year?

I heard on the radio a few years ago about a new year tradition where you write yourself a check for a certain amount, and write something in the memo and you carry it around all year with you and it’s supposed to bring you wealth and prosperity (I think) I may have some of the details mixed up. Anyone know what I’m talking about? or what it is exactly you’re supposed to do? I wanna say it’s a chinese tradition, but I’m not sure. Thanks!
