How do Thais celebrate the New Year? Any interesting things to suggest? Will there be any countdown parties?

I’ll be in BKK over the New Year but don’t know what to expect. Any suggestions?

yes, they have BBK countdown 2008 at central world plaza.

They will have fireworks, muscial concerts, shows and dance performance. The whole country also celebrates the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King during the countdown.

yes they have a countdown at Central World, they also had one last year, however a few idiots planted bombs near the area, killing one person and injuring others. best bet is get together with friends at a local pub.

Thailand celebrates the western New Year in a big way, just about every bar and big hotel will have some kind of celebration, and as the previous answer said there is a Times Square style countdown at the plaza in front of the Central World Plaza mall, although last year it was cancelled because of numerous bombs that were set off just before midnight in and around the plaza. Just go to any entertainment area and there’s sure to be some kind of party.

Best is not to expect anything and be pleasantly surprised. Hotels will be celebrating with grand dinners and parties. If you want the outside atmosphere, Central World Plaza is where you need to be for the countdown.

Happy New Year. Sawadee Pee Mai as they say in Thai.
